Kotel – a town is legend and history. At the approach to the town three stone soldiers are standing eternal guard. A date is carved in the rock opposite them: 1280. Bellow it there is a lion – a symbol of strength and power.
In this way the old town welcomes its guests. It is ready to reveal them past and present. They will stop fascinated at the town square, buried in wild geranium and boxshrubs. They will bow to the pleiad of enlighteners, who served the homeland with pen and gun at the Museum of Renaissance. Then they will submerge into the atmosphere of the old Kotel home from 18 – 19 century in the Ethnographic museum. And the Galatan School with its exposition of beautiful weaves, a splendid woman’s costume, silver and golden jewelry reveals the life style and spirit of the Kotel woman – a skillful weaver of carpets and rugs.

After a short break the visitors enchanted by the romantic spell of Kotel go to the pearl of the Kotel region – Zheravna. Situated amphitheatrically in the slopes of the Old Balkan, the village fascinates with its preserved National Revival aspect. And then they will take their way to the small village of Medven.Medven is a small village huddled like an eagle’s nest in the Balkan. It has preserved all the splendor of the Revival period. The three hamlets are peacefully sprawled among valleys and stack yards, and the doors of the wooden houses still bear scars from Circassian axes.
The tourists will visit the house-museum Zahari Stoyanov in the hamlet of Urtata that illustrates the warmth and coziness of the poor mountain home and tells of the life and work of the chronicler of the April uprising epopee. They will quench their thirst at the fountain of the village square, where the imposing monument of Zahari Stoyanov is rising amidst lush vegetation, and will see the birth place of Stoyan Buchvarov – an eminent Bulgarian actor.
Then the tourist will take the panoramic road to the beautiful Sinia Vir waterfall that curves along the river banks through walnut groves and willow trees, and feel the enchanting attraction of this fascinating region that gave birth to great Bulgarians, generously endowed with the beauties of Nature.
